How to Achieve Excellence:

Sensei Mike’s Formula

Last weekend, over 200 of our Karate Kids passed their grading test, earning their next belts. For some, it was their first step into the karate world, earning their yellow belts, while others advanced to brown belts. The grading test was a huge success, with every child meeting the standards required for their level. In short, they were excellent. So, my question to them this week was, "How did you become excellent?"

Many students gave answers that included parts of being excellent, but none had a clear plan. So, I thought it would be a good idea to create a formula to help them understand the steps and repeat them time after time.

Here it is: Sensei Mike’s Formula for Excellence.

Step 1: Learn Something New

Learn something new

The journey begins with learning the new skills required for the next belt. We start with clear and specific requirements, slowly building on previous knowledge.

Step 2: Practice

Practice tightrope

Not a difficult concept, but an important one to reinforce. Doing things once or twice doesn’t lead to excellence. And remember, proper practice is key—practicing poorly makes you good at doing things poorly. Practice makes permanent, not perfect.

Step 3: When It’s Hard Work, Work Hard

Dont just wish for it

Simple, right? When things get tough, it’s time to swap the words around and work hard.

Step 4: If There’s a Test, Do Your BEST

Not just try or give it a go, but do your very best. Use all your energy, power, and concentration. Bring everything to the table and leave nothing behind.

Step 5: Celebrate!

This is what grown-ups often forget. Celebrate your success, hard work, commitment, and energy. We reward our students immediately after the test with their next belt, public praise, and applause. We have a fun celebration night with balloon games, just before we start at Step 1 again.

So there you have it, Sensei Mike’s Formula for Excellence.

Will this formula work for school subjects like Math and Science? I don’t see why not. It’s a better formula than most seem to have. What do you think?

Please leave your comments on the blog or Facebook page. I’m interested in creating an even better formula to help more people achieve excellence in their lives.

Have fun and stay safe!
